COMMUNITY:

In biological terms, a community is a group of interacting organisms sharing an environment. In human communities, intent, belief, resources, preferences, needs, risks, and a number of other conditions may be present and common, affecting the identity of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness. In sociology, the concept of community has caused infinite debate, and sociologists are yet to reach agreement on a definition of the term. There were ninety-four discrete definitions of the term by the mid-1950s. Traditionally a "community" has been defined as a group of interacting people living in a common location. The word is often used to refer to a group that is organized around common values and social cohesion within a shared geographical location, generally in social units larger than a household. The word can also refer to the national community or global community. The word community is derived from the Old French communité which is derived from the Latin communitas, a broad term for fellowship or organized society.[1]

Since the advent of the Internet, the concept of community no longer has geographical limitations, as people can now virtually gather in an online community and share common interests regardless of physical location. Invitation: If you direct or are a part of a collective / non-profit / organization, let us know about you. The purpose is to thread the waters.

FEATURED GALLERY:

World renown visual and tattoo artist Paul Booth has created a womb to shelter himself, his visions, and the art-thirsty beings of New York City, right in the belly of the world. Just a few blocks away from Penn Station, on 10th ave and 33rd st, you'll find a secret haven for all that is Dark art. But we mean, quality, good, delicious, exhilerating, nerve-wrecking dark art. The kind that either gives you the shivers, makes you smile with a devilish grin, or simply, walk away quickly, after finding inner fears reflected on the canvas.

Each wall, each corner, each sound and emotion happening at Last Rites Gallery, has been carefully constructed by the mischievous brains of Paul Booth and his team. Signed and numbered print editions by artists of high caliber, such as H.R. Giger, Paul Booth himself, Fred Harper and Genevive Zacconi are available to those whose art collection is once again in dire need of a proper boost, or to those right on time to start collecting.

Adjacent, Last Rites Tattoo Theater and Art Fusion bring that drop of exotic darkness fit for the city of sin and sleepless wonders. Resident Artists, Toxic, Little Dragon, Stefano Alcantara and Timothy Boor together with guest artists from all over the world, join their skills during the opening celebrations of each exhibit as part of The Art Fusion Experiment, delivering a combination of colors and imaginary insects and beautiful monsters that leave many with their jaws dropped.

We have chosen Last Rites Gallery as our featured gallery for this 4th issue, because of the quality of the art they represent, the skillful presentation of each of their shows, the originality and magnificence of their concept, and over all, for creating an open space for New York City artists to interact, while surrounded by the desguise of great ink, and even greater art.

Statement by Last Rites Gallery:

Last Rites Gallery was created to offer a new home for artists that prefer to explore the darker side of their imagination. Our intent is to bring a greater appreciation to this often overlooked genre.

We feel that the most powerful art is that which touches the viewer emotionally. By hitting a nerve, this work will often cause one to look inward and explore their own feelings and intense thoughts. Facing one's fears, negating puritanical taboos, and tapping into often repressed emotions is truly empowering and this is where dark art finds its strength. Last Rites Gallery offers a place to recognise this work as it relates to the individual.

We utilize the global reputation of artist and gallery owner Paul Booth, built over that last 20 years to bring a broader scope of art patrons, as well as interest and understanding in the phenomenon of dark art.

The uniqueness of the gallery, aside from its focus on such work, is the collaborative effort between founding director, Genevive Zacconi and Paul Booth. The fact that they are accomplished artists as well, allows for a stronger relationship with the artists we show, and a more understanding and creative approach to the overall presentation of their work. This enhances the experience for everyone visiting Last Rites Gallery.

Preparations for the V Annual Book Fair at the Queens Museum of Art are underway. We are forming a selected group of artists, authors and panels, and performers. The V Book Fair Expo will feature local and international authors, a main stage, children reading area, and the magnificent amphitheater of QMA for readings, book signings and book releases. The Unisphere Gallery will host the opening ceremony cocktail and exhibitors stands. The New York Book Fair Expo is holding its V Book Expo New York at the Queens Museum of Art in Flushing Meadow Park for its October 10, 2010 edition. The Queens Museum of Art, at New York City Building, Flushing Meadows Corona Park Queens, NY 11368 in New York City, provides convenient access, either on site or nearby, to everything visitors from the publishing and editorial industry might want or need, from restaurants, hotel rooms and entertainment, to a quick trip to the Flushing Meadow Park.
"The V annual Book Expo will bring everything together in a historic, great space that shows off Queens, New York at its best," Founder and Director of NY Book Fair Expo Jacqueline Donado said in a media release.
The Queens Museum of Art is dedicated to presenting the highest quality visual arts and educational programming for people in the New York metropolitan area, and particularly for the residents of Queens, a uniquely diverse ethnic, cultural and international community.
"And even though the Queens Museum of Art is a larger venue than our last site, the St Demetrios Greek American School, we relocated the event looking for a larger space, separate room for lectures and conference, café and a great exhibition space for art, music and dance presentations".
The exhibition space will be on the Unisphere Gallery and the floors connected by an escalator. Vendors should secure their booths as soon as possible.
An exciting new feature of this year's Fair is the Metro Book Fair to be held on Spring, Summer and Winter. We hope you can attend this and the celebratory 5th Anniversary Cocktail Reception.

OPEN CALLS:

-->a project to create the first Nuit Blanche in New York- submit proposals for artworks to help make Oak Street in Greenpoint come alive with artwork that lights up the night. Bring to Light NYC will be held September 18 and will be an all-night arts festival of installations, music and performances that will close the street for the community and celebrate the magic and luminance of light (think projections, lasers, films, etc.) deadline is July 30. If you are interested in helping to bring this project together, next planning meeting: this upcoming Monday June 19 at 7:30 pm at 82 Oak Street. Contact Anna, anmuessig@gmail.com

-->NYC Department of Buildings is launching a national design competition called urbancanvas. The urbancanvas Design Competition is a unique opportunity to challenge professional artists and designers to create printed artwork for temporary protective structures at construction sites that will beautify New York City’s streetscape and promote maintenance of these structures. See: nyc.gov/urbancanvas.

-->September 19, noon-6p, The Case of the Curious Pedestrian. A street festival is the perfect event for discovering the obscure gems and unexplored moments of beauty that exist in a commercial corridor. Closing the street to automobile traffic makes people more aware of their environment, which is filled with the choreography of pedestrians, the nooks & crannies of commercial spaces, and the unspoken history of its sidewalks. The Case of the Curious Pedestrian is a one-day exhibition of performance art and ephemeral installations that celebrates these overlooked details. Artists will take to Myrtle Avenue with artistic interventions and social interactions, in an effort to reconnect passersby with the things they often pass without notice. They will also create hidden installations to be stumbled upon by unsuspecting shoppers, and turn Myrtle Avenue into a cabinet of curiosities. To participate, contact Christina Vassallo, christinavassallo@gmail.com

-->The New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) has allocated $21.5 million (phase 1+ phase 2) for streetscape improvements on Jackson Avenue between Queens Plaza and 21st Street. Affairs (DCA) Percent for Art Program is seeking artists for the commission of permanent artwork on Jackson Avenue. http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcla/html/panyc/form.shtml
