EDITORIAL:
Summer continues to enchant me. The whole coming-out-of-your-nest experience after six harsh months of hidding is almost like a rebirth, without the dramatic side effects. Yes, spring did ease the pain of change a little bit, but who on earth really believes that right here, in this city full of too-colorful mini-mini-too-miny skirts, cleavage everywhere, high heels, long starbucks lines and penty of air conditioning, a few months ago we were all tripping and tumbling due to the many feet of snow. A year ago, right in the middle of summer and under a sun equally as aggressive as the one we will see this week, (or almost, damn heat waves) the promise of Red Door NY was made to a handful of you, on a rooftop in Long Island City.
The pledge to create a space for free expression, honesty and good art, in all its forms, has evolved in only four issues to a magazine of such magnitude that it does not cease to impress us. Check out the literature section, or the visual arts, or the community page. It's getting crowded, and it feels good to know you are all becoming a part of this movement. Red Door is not a magazine for the masses. It is not a website that counts hits and daily visitors, or that charges anyone per link. We are simply art-obsessed human beings doing what we love the most, burning our eyelashes and smiling like idiots, always ready for more. Thanks to all of you for the support. We have received comments from Pakistan, Germany, Argentina, many cities in the US, and so many countries in the U.S that it would be boring to list them for you. But the point is made, we are here, this is your space, and we will gladly continue because we know it's worth it. You all have proved it.
Our return from Mexico was very fruitful (yum, watermelons, fruits...orange juice... I'm thirsty again), and it still doesn't feel as if we had returned. We participated in two poetry festivals, one in Michoacan, the other one in Chapala, and met so many great artists that we could not fit them all in just one issue. However, two of them, both amazing poets, have joined us in this journey and in this issue, we welcome them with open arms: Mario Z. Puglisi and Tanya Cosio, will both be submitting content from Mexico. (welcome, welcome, and thank you!). One more fortunate encounter has occured, and Alejandro Alban Alvarez will be joining us as well, writing from Medellin, Colombia. (home, sweet home, for those who like random facts)... I miss Mexico, I miss Guadalajara, I miss the tortilla soup, and I miss waking up knowing that I was far, far, far away from New York. I missed it once again, and this was something a doctor could have not prescribed.
Approximately 30 artists, (poets, musicians, writers, illustrators, tattoo artists, performers) were included in this issue of the magazine, and many more were left on the waiting room, ready for the next issue. We invite you to submit your content and become one of us. Red Door Magazine is waiting for you.
Enough talking. There's way too much for you to see. Remember we are open to any suggestions, proposals, projects, ideas and submissions. Undresscode exposed, no boundaries. We exist!
Welcome to the fourth issue of Red Door Magazine. Have a fantastic summer, and please, pass this along to your friends.
It gets worse: I have learned to accept the fact that small and delicate objects, such as needles, piercings, earrings, fine-point pencils and pens, or even nailpolish, become absolutely obsolete in my hands. No, it isn't something I'm proud of, but I've managed to live without learning crochet, and the five years of Art School were survived in spite of my embarrasing print-making skills and watercolors.
